Surprise: We Got Married!

Oh my GOD, I can finally tell you all!!! This past weekend, on Saturday, September 24, in front of all of our closest family & friends, we got married! Yes, that’s right, I am now officially MARRIED!!! I am definitely still riding the high from the incredible (but crazy) day we had on Saturday. Of course, there will be a much more detailed blog post to come in the coming months when our wedding photos get delivered, but for now, I’ll keep this one as short & sweet as possible so I can share some of my favourite details of each part of the day with all of you.

And lastly, before we jump into the breakdown of all things wedding, I just have to say a little happy THREE YEAR anniversary to this blog of mine! What a fitting way to celebrate three years of blog writing with a “we got married” post! Now, let’s get into it.

Getting Ready

I can honestly say we started our morning off on an amazing note, aside from the fact that I left without bringing the bridesmaid robes & slippers — but I did turn back & get them with tons of time to spare! We got to our hotel bright & early, about 30 minutes before we needed to start getting my maid of honour into makeup. I hired a friend from high school to do our makeup, so the first couple of hours were super chill and laid back. We snacked, drank mimosas and just enjoyed hanging out with some music playing.

The hairstylist, Taylor Cameron arrived at 11am, and then it was go-time! When she wrapped up at noon, we had a few minutes to clean up & get the room ready for the photographers arrival at 12:30pm. Once the photographer, Stephanie Mason arrived, it was go time. We did a few photos in our robes & then got dressed, did some photos in my dress & then off for the venue we went!

The First Look

I will have to admit, you’re going to have to wait until I get the professional photos to share any behind the scenes of our first look, but I have to say I am so happy that we did it. Funny enough, the reason we decided to do a first look at all was because we couldn't get all of our photos (wedding party, family photos & bride and groom photos) done after the ceremony with a short enough cocktail hour. I absolutely get why people love doing first looks now though, and luckily no tears were shed… but almost.

The Ceremony & Reception

When we did our first look, I thought for sure I wouldn’t be nearly as emotional during the ceremony but in fact, we were both more emotional and almost cried multiple times through our ceremony. We kept the ceremony short and sweet (thankfully, because my feet were hurting so badly after hours of wearing my heels), and there were definitely a few tears amongst our guests. After the ceremony, we had everyone join us for a quick group photo, and then everyone went off to the cocktail hour, and we went to our bride & groom photo session!

After our photos and the cocktail hour were complete, we had a quick introduction as husband and wife, and sat down for an amazing four-course dinner, including a wedge salad, tomato soup, choice of entrée between vegetarian arancini & a skillet chicken, and lastly a slice of our wedding cake. We enjoyed two speeches from my bridal party, which were both basically a roast of me, and then we started the party!

The Paaaaarty!

Now, we didn’t have a typical wedding where we hired a DJ. We only had 40 people there, ourselves included, so it seemed kind of silly to hire a DJ for that little amount of people, but we cranked the music, had a few drinks, and then a few more post-dinner guests arrived. We danced, enjoyed our time in the photobooth, went around and chatted with our guests, enjoyed a few shots courtesy of some of our guests, and after a few drinks, we realized… since we decided against a formal first dance, our first dance together as husband as wife was while we were a little drunk and we danced to Gold Digger by Kanye West & Jamie Foxx 😂

All in all, it was the most perfect day & I wouldn’t change a thing. We were right on schedule the entire time, we had so much fun without making it feel too intense for anyone involved, and we were lucky to be able to get photos with our Freddie (that’s a long story & will be coming in our full wedding-day detailed blog that will go live when I have the professional photos back!) Lastly? Pro-tip: Do the photobooth. It’s worth it!
