5 Magical Books to Read this October
Happy October everyone!!! My favourite month is here (and it’s only partly because my birthday is a few short days away, hehe!) and that means spooky season is right around the corner. Here in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving in early October, so the moment that is over, I go right into spooky mode, and nothing gets me into the spirit of the season like a good book that sets the scene. I started reading fall books last month, and I’ve put a pretty good dent in my TBR so far because of it. If you’re looking for some magical books to enjoy this October, I’ve got them for you!
The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic
Breanne Randall
This was the first book that I read this fall/spooky season, and I think it was an amazing introduction to my favourite time of the year. The themes were witchy and magical, with a side of romance and a little bit of heartbreak (hence, the title name!). Much of this book involves cooking and baking, and one thing that I thought was so cool and different about this book is that each chapter includes a recipe for something that was mentioned in that chapter. Not only do you get a witchy read, you get some new recipes to try too!
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Pumpkin Spice Café
Laurie Gilmore
In hindsight, I wish that I would’ve started my fall reads with this book. Not because The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic wasn’t amazing, but simply because fall themes are more prominent in The Pumpkin Spice Café, vs. witchy in the rest of these books. The Pumpkin Spice Café is truly the most amazing fall read and was exactly what I was looking for – easy to read, fall vibes, romance & smut. The only reason that I gave the book a 2.5 star rating is because the plot line overall isn’t terribly original; I still highly recommend reading this to get you into the fall spirit!
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️.5
Small Town, Big Magic
Hazel Beck
Diving back into the witchy themes with Small Town, Big Magic! I really enjoyed this book, particularly because the plot line is very original. I don’t like to give the details of a book away in my reviews, so it’s very difficult to get into why this one is so good and different since the overall theme is again, witchy but with some romance. There’s a bit of a mysterious element to this storyline as well, and though I wouldn’t call anything “scary”, there’s a few very intense scenes where a character is keeping secrets that could be very bad if it’s revealed to other characters. I’ll leave it at that… pick up this book!
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.8
Enchanted to Meet You
Meg Cabot
I cannot tell you how much I adored this book, but it should come as no surprise given that this is the same author as The Princess Diaries series. I also very much appreciated the title being a reference to lyrics from Enchanted by Taylor Swift. The plot is definitely a little predictable, but not as predictable as The Pumpkin Spice Café and I will say there felt like there was a large build up to the ending, which ended up being pretty PG, and lacklustre in my opinion. Overall, still an incredible witchy read & felt more rooted in “reality” vs. in other witchy reads I’ve read this season.
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches
Sangu Mandanna
The last book that I have completed so far this year – The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. Though I felt this book started off a little slow, I absolutely loved this one. I think it might be my favourite fall/spooky season book I’ve read so far this season. There is a reason that this book is all over BookTok. The storyline is very original, there’s some twists and turns that are unexpected and I loved the character diversity in this story. You don’t often see characters described so well, and so culturally diverse, especially in typical romance/seasonal reads, so I was thoroughly impressed with this! A definite must-read.
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.8
I still have so many more books on my to be read, and I can’t wait to get through them! I’m currently making my way through Rewitched by Lucy Jane Wood, and though I’m still very early in this book, this one also seems quite promising. Keep an eye out for more book reviews as we head into the upcoming holiday season! Coming November, I’ll be starting to make my way through my Christmas books 😉
