5 New Hobbies to Try in 2025

It’s (almost) a new year, and I don’t know about you, but for the last little while, I’ve been wanting to enjoy time away from screens more frequently, and have been trying out new hobbies that I think I’d enjoy – safe to say, I’ve found quite a few that I actually really love! Given that a vast majority of us work on screens all day for a living, it feels nice to get back to our roots, making things with our hands & enjoying time being chronically offline instead of chronically online! All of this to say, let’s talk about some new hobbies I’ve tried out, and you may want to in 2025 as well.

01. Knitting & Crocheting

A new hobby I’ve recently picked up is knitting! I’m currently working my way through a scarf to get into the habit of making the stitches, and then I’m hoping next up after I’ve gotten better at knitting, I’ll give crocheting a try. I definitely still have a long way to go, but my goal is to be able to knit socks, hats, scarves & sweaters, and then maybe eventually learn to crochet all of these items too!

02. Embroidery

Similar to knitting & crocheting, embroidery is another fun, hands-on hobby that is super rewarding when you finish! Etsy has tons of great patterns, no matter what your style, for affordable prices (EPhillipsEmbroidery has some of my favourites; especially since they’re Taylor Swift inspired!). It usually takes me about a week from start to finish and it’s been such a relaxing, fun hobby to enjoy.

03. Baking

If you enjoy sweet treats, but don’t really bake… well, why not learn? Every fall, my husband, myself & his family hit up a local apple orchard to pick our own apples. I don’t eat raw apples personally, so we usually end up having more apples than we can get through before they rot, so I decided to try making an entire apple pie from scratch this year and it was super fun & pretty successful for my first try! You can check out the blog I wrote with that recipe here.

04. Gardening

My absolute favourite hobby – gardening! I’ve always been mildly interested in gardening, but in 2020, it really picked up. I started with primarily vegetables & some flowers, all done from starters from the local hardware store, and over time, I’ve learned seed starting for both vegetables and flowers! This year, I’m aiming to learn some seed starting techniques and master storage of seeds, tubers & corms.

05. Pottery & Pottery Painting

At the end of 2024, I found myself scrolling Pinterest and coming across the cutest painted pottery bowls with little blueberries in it, and I was sold. I went to a local pottery painting store, bought everything I needed and ended up making a whole set of 4 bowls, each having a different fruit on it – blueberries, strawberries, cherries & oranges. They’re seriously my favourite dishes in our cupboard now! After doing pottery painting, I decided I wanted to try out a beginner wheel pottery class, so hopefully I’ll get to try that soon!

What hobbies are you planning on trying out in the new year? I’m always looking for new things to try out, so if you have any suggestions, drop them in the comments below!

Until next time... Emily
