Are Blue Light Glasses Worth It?

Chances are you’ve probably heard of blue light glasses, how they help you to avoid eye strain from tech in your day-to-day lives, and you’ve also probably heard that the research on if they actually work is inconclusive as of right now. You’re now probably wondering how I’m writing a blog about if they’re worth it or not, if the findings are still up in the air. Well, like all things on this blog, it’s all just my own personal opinion!

My Personal Experience

Jumping right to the point — I love my blue light glasses. Is it a placebo affect? It very well could be. But I remember being at work one day in 2018, and I had to get up and walk away from my computer because my eyes were starting to hurt. As I was walking, I noticed I was having a hard time seeing — it was almost like something was blocking part of my vision. I knew that I had to have strained my eyes too intensely that day with all of the screens I was looking at, so I instantly ordered myself some blue light glasses to help.

Now, whenever I feel like I’ve been looking at a screen too long, but of course I need to continue on with my work day, I grab my blue light glasses, and I almost instantly can feel a difference — the only words I can think are that my eyes feel far more relaxed, and I haven’t noticed any of that eye strain since. I even notice if I wear them first thing in the morning, it takes a lot longer for me to feel awake (if you don’t already know this, blue light from your computer screen can mimic sunlight, which tells your brain it’s time to wake up!). So would I recommend them? Yes, I definitely would! Am I doctor? Absolutely not. My thoughts on it are if the worst thing you’re doing is wearing glasses that you don’t need (without a prescription, of course), then you’re probably going to be okay, regardless.

Do you wear blue light glasses? Would you say that they help with eye strain when it comes to using screens all day? I’m curious to know if anyone else loves them, or even hates them! Let me know in the comments!

Until next time, Emily
