Cruelty-Free Winter Jackets

Winter in Canada. If you live here, you know exactly the tone I just said that in. I absolutely love Canada, and to be honest, I actually quite enjoy the winter here too (not hard to tell I’ve lived here my entire life, eh?), but there is absolutely no denying that certain parts of Canada can get wicked winter storms, and we’ve definitely experienced very cold days with the wind chill – I’m talking -40°C here (that’s -40°F for my American friends!). All of this to say – it gets cold.

If you live here, or any other colder climate area of the world, you know that a good winter coat is necessary, and unfortunately, a lot of the best & warmest winter coats involve a lot of animal cruelty (i.e., down filled with goose or duck feathers, and/or fur trims and/or linings). Of course, being a vegetarian & living the most cruelty-free lifestyle I can, I don’t love this. So I started on a hunt this year for a new winter coat that didn’t involve any of the above mentioned things & I’ve collected some of my favourites & possible considerations for me this winter to share with all of you.

Living a cruelty-free lifestyle to the best of my abilities is extremely important to me, but of course I’m completely aware that especially during this pandemic, some of these price points that Matt & Nat and Noize have aren’t exactly accessible to everyone, so that’s why I made sure to include some options from Joe Fresh as well. Though I’m not sure they can hold up to the -40° with the wind chill kind of days, layering jackets from Joe Fresh with some thermal items and heavy cable knits I’m sure would do the trick. I wore my blush pink Jilly Jacket throughout the entire winter last year on milder days and it was nice & toasty warm for me (and I live in parts of Canada that get not fun winters)!

Though a lot of people think Canada is a frozen tundra all the time, and we’re all used to the snow all year long, it’s definitely not. In fact, the west coast doesn’t get nearly as much snow & cold weather as the middle to eastern parts of Canada do! I made sure to include some lighter winter coats for those of you on the west coast who don’t freeze with the rest of us.

So that’s my list of contenders for a new, cruelty-free winter jacket this year! Do you have a favourite? I personally think I might be leaning towards the style Hannah from Noize in pink because, well, I love pink, and it looks like it’ll keep me nice & toasty warm. If you think I missed any awesome cruelty-free jackets, leave me a comment below - otherwise, see you again on Friday for a new blog post!
