My Balcony Gardening Must Have Tools & Supplies

Spring has officially sprung! I’ve started a handful of my seeds for the year, and before we know it, the snow will be gone and garden centres will be reopening. Safe to say, I’m thrilled that I’ll be back in the garden very soon. Though I’m definitely in the beginning stages of things like starting my plants from seed, this will be my third year of balcony gardening, and I’ve got to say, it really makes our balcony feel so lively! If you’re also looking to update your small outdoor space with some plants this year, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite, must have tools & supplies for gardening on a balcony.

Must Have Tools for the Garden

Of course, in order to get started on your garden, you need the actual tools to get it going! Since we’re talking about balcony/container gardening, there’s going to be some tools that may be beneficial in a traditional, in-ground garden that won’t be necessary at all in containers like a garden hoe, shovels or large forks; but the smaller versions of these like trowels, 3 or 4-prong cultivators and even a handheld hoe can be helpful! I will mention, that most of these tools are also beneficial & needed in a traditional garden as well; so don’t think these are exclusive to smaller-scale gardens.

Things I Love for Gardening

Yes, there are your must have items like pots, pruners and soil, but what about things that just help make your life that much easier? For me, those things include having shoes & clothes that I wear specifically in the garden, so I don’t have to think about whether I’m "ruining” something — personally, I like to use my old Hunter rain boots since they’re collected some holes in them courtesy of my dog thinking they were a chew toy, and I have a pair of overalls that I got for less than $35. Plus, you can’t forget sun protection! I also recently treated myself to a new sunhat to wear in the garden to make sure I protect my skin from those UV rays.

In addition to clothes & shoes, making sure I have something to store my tools themselves in is beneficial for me, not only because it keeps them all organized & in one place, but it allows me to move them around more easily, especially if I need more than one item at a time. Just make sure you keep it somewhere that it won’t get wet; you don’t want your tools to rust.

If you’re new to gardening, especially in a small space, or on a balcony where you’re limited to growing in containers, I hope this blog post helped you to figure out some tools & supplies you may need for your gardening adventures. Let me know in the comments below what your must have gardening items are, or if you’re just starting your container garden this year!

Until next time, Emily
