Simple Christmas Home Decor
Depending on where you live in this crazy world, this year, Christmas probably looks pretty different for you and your family. COVID-19 has really put a damper on a lot of the holidays this year, and while it’s really devastating to not be able to be with family as we usually would be, I saw a wonderful quote that said “we stay apart so when we gather again, no one is missing”, and that really struck a chord with me, and I hope we all can continue to do what is best for everyone during this time.
Since we are more than likely not going to be allowed to have family gatherings this year, you might be looking to keep your decor more minimal this year. I don’t know about you, but I’m not someone who can forgo the Christmas decor entirely - there’s still got to be some sort of decorations up! But of course, who wants to spend two days putting up decorations when it’s really only you & your household members who will be able to enjoy it? Well, today, I’m going to break down how to decorate your house for the holiday season, but in a much simpler way:
Start with The Basics
You always want to start with your basics: your Christmas tree, the garland & the wreaths, and it can be any combination of those things; even just a tree! But you’ll want to start by putting up your Christmas tree, real or fake, and then adding your wreaths and garland around your home where you’d like them. Garland also doesn’t just mean the pine-balsam-cedar-greenery kind! If you have pom pom garlands, gold leaves, whatever — it doesn’t matter what kind of garland it is, as long as it’s your base items that you want to add decor on top of (or maybe you even just want to stop at the garland!).

Ornaments & Decor
In comes your ornaments, and lights! And more than likely - your pop of colour, if you’ve got one. I’m personally more of a woodsy, winter wonderland kind of decorator myself, so I like to keep the colours in my Christmas decor on the green, white, beige, brown & other neutrals kind of side. Sometimes, I’ll add a small pop of red to the decor, but overall, I like to keep it pretty simple & something that can be kept up throughout the winter, and not just for Christmas.
The Final Touches
And lastly is your finishing touches, aka, knick-knacks. Nutcrackers, light up village houses, candles, you name it! Pretty much anything that isn’t greenery or ornaments. My favourite pieces to include in the finishing touches section are the white, light up village homes, bottle brush trees, nutcrackers & tree-scented candles (my personal favourite tree-scented candle is the Balsam & Cedar candle from Illume at Indigo). You can also add a warm & fuzzy blanket that matches your decor, and even some Christmas-themed pillows. Also — don’t forget to finish off your tree with a tree skirt or tree collar!
The best part about all of these instructions is that you can entirely limit it to just decorating your tree, if that’s all you want to do, or you can go all-out and add a little bit of Christmas spirit throughout your home. This blog post may be titled simple Christmas home decor, but I’m anything but simple when it comes to decorating for my favourite time of the year.
When do you start decorating for Christmas? I usually like to decorate the weekend after Remembrance Day since I like to prolong the time I get to enjoy said decor as long as possible. Not to mention, it usually takes a fair amount of work (I’m talking like, two days…) so I want to space out the putting-up & taking-down time as far away as possible! I have a really fun blog post that I’m super excited about coming out on Friday sharing with you some of my go-to decorating tips & tricks, so please don’t forget to come back then to find out how I can make your life a bit easier & your home a bit cozier. Until then!
