Small Business Spotlight: Luna & Co.

It’s been a while since you’ve seen one of these posts, but it’s time to do another small business spotlight here on the blog! Today’s small business that I want to talk about is none other than Luna & Co.! I honestly can’t tell you how I came across the Luna & Co. Instagram page back in 2020, but I’m so glad I did. When we first got Freddie, I was trying so hard to find a nice, simple & neutral coloured leash for him (if you know me, it’s all about the aesthetics!), and I couldn’t find one anywhere — enter finding Luna & Co.! I placed an order with Macy, the owner, through Instagram & fell in love with the quality & customization I was able to get with her products. Fast forward to now, and she’s the only place I buy collars & leashes for Freddie!

So you might be wondering what I love so much about Luna & Co.; well, like I mentioned at the start of this blog, when we first got Freddie, I was on the hunt for cute, simple & neutral leashes, and at the time, I felt like I couldn’t find anything I really liked all that much. Then I came across Luna & Co. on Instagram, placed an order for a custom leash that featured Freddie’s name on it & our ongoing friendship developed from there! The quality of the items are so good — Freddie’s a puller & leash-biter, and all of our items have really stood up to my 90lb dog’s strength.

Fast forward to 2021, Macy asked Freddie to be apart of the brand ambassador program and of course we accepted because have you seen how cute the items are?! My personal favourite leash & collar are the Forest Green (I may or may not be hinting at what one of our wedding colours might be…) but of course, you cannot go wrong with the Aspen, Espresso and Nut colour ways as well. Another great part about these items? You can choose the colour of your hardware for your collar and/or leash as well. But, it doesn’t end there, Luna and Co. also offers clothing for the pet parents too!

Q&A with Macy of Luna & Co.

What made you want to start Luna & Co.?
To be honest, LUNA & CO. was never supposed to become an actual company. I started creating pieces due to the lack of products I wish I could have found in stores. Being a new dog mom at the time, I would search all throughout southern Ontario going to every pet store I drove by, big box and boutique, looking for something that was not only practical, but aesthetically appealing. I truly don’t believe you have to sacrifice one for the other.

Although small, my pup and I are adventurous. We love city walking, hiking, the beach, and so much more. I was tired of getting our nylon/rope leashes soaked by lake water, becoming heavy, smelling terribly, and eventually fraying from the wear and tear of the elements. Secondly, I’m very much a minimalist - not one for too much pattern or a crazy amount of colour. So finding items that weren’t heavily patterned, extremely gendered, or made of extremely absorbable material wasn’t as easy as I thought it’d be.

Tired of wasting my money on things that weren’t suitable for our needs, it was time to take matters into my own hands and create products that would withstand the elements and test of time. After some research and my first few designs for my own pup, it turned out that I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. With a simple Instagram post, my friends and fellow dog parents loved what I had created and asked me if I could make some for theirs. Ecstatically, I got to work - one order became two, two became three, etc. It became a passion “project” inspired by my lifestyle and my friends. However, organically, it became LUNA & CO., named after my very own Luna. I could not be more thankful for the never ending support of what it’s become.

Which product would you say is your absolute favourite & why?
I can have more than one favourite, right? I feel this list grows with each new product I introduce because I become hyper obsessed with it the moment I make it. I strive to make every piece I create of high quality and something not only myself, but others will LOVE.

However, if I had to choose, I think I need to provide an answer for the accessories and the apparel line. For dog accessories, my absolute favourite is the Aspen leash - that crisp white that never stays dirty due to how easily it can be cleaned (just a wipe with some water and mild detergent, and it’s as good as new) paired with the solid brass gold hardware. It is sleek, it is classy, and mostly — it is practical. In the apparel category, my absolute favourite is the white and green DOG MOMAGER crewneck. I find myself reaching for it every time I feel the need to get cozy.

Where are you hoping to see Luna & Co. in the future? Do you want it to become your full time job one day?
I’m hoping to see LUNA & CO. remain in my future - to become bigger than I ever expected or could hope. I think every entrepreneur wants their company to become their full-time job. I would love to be the staple product every dog parent has - the ones that you would suggest to others. Maybe one day I’ll be in all of those boutiques and big box stores I once hoped products like mine would be in.

Do you have any dream collaborations?
I would LOVE to have a collab with Lululemon because more times than not I’m wearing their apparel when I’m out with my pup and they too are also Canadian! With dog walking, the introduction of puppy yoga, and other active pursuits, I think some magic could happen.

Any teasers of what other new products could be coming soon?
Fall is quickly approaching, so I can’t wait to introduce fall colours in both the accessory and apparel lines. Additionally, I’m looking to expand our accessory line (hint: to encourage people to poop and scoop) - so stay tuned!

If you have a dog, I highly recommend checking out Luna & Co. for cute & neutral coloured dog (and pet owner) products! Plus, you’re supporting a Canadian small business, so why not shop & support? 😉
