Jackets For The Spring Season

Anyone else felt like this is the most never-ending winter you’ve ever gone through?! I don’t know if where you live has snow during the winter, but this year I feel like since the snow showed up in November, and it’s now that it’s March, I’m just absolutely craving seeing some green grass, and even just a bit of warmth at this point. The upside? We’re finally getting there! The snow has started to melt to reveal the disgusting, brown, muddy grass that will soon be lovely and green, and away will go our heavy down-filled winter coats, and out will come the light jackets to keep us warm while out and about in the cooler spring breeze!

If I’m being honest, I’m an absolute jacket addict. I’m about 99% sure I talked about this when I did my blog post all about My Cold Weather Style way back in the fall, but I own probably more jackets than one person needs (okay… definitely more jackets than one person needs), but different styles & weather call for options, and in today’s blog post, I’m going to feature my favourite styles of jackets to rock with different outfits during the spring.

Denim Jackets

Now, one thing that I wear a lot is my denim jackets. Yes, plural - jackets. I like to have different washes, colours & lengths of denim jackets depending what I’m wearing (which I will get more into detail about what I’d wear with each style of these denim jackets below). Sometimes if you’re wearing a more fitted outfit, a big oversized denim jacket completes the outfit, but can make a looser fitting outfit appear frumpy, so what’s when I’d like to throw on a more traditionally fitted one. Denim jackets may seem like it’s a you-buy-one-and-you’re-done kind of jacket for your wardrobe, but it really is beneficial to give yourself options.

1. American Eagle Classic Denim Jacket: This cropped denim jacket is absolutely perfect to pair with almost any style of dress for the spring, but the style I’d most likely pair it to myself would be a dress that is fitted at the waist. A lot of times, I’ll wear a dress that’s fitted at the waist with a hip-length denim jacket, and it can end up hiding my curves. By wear a cropped jacket, the bottom of the jacket will end at the smallest part of your waist, which is where your dress is the most fitted & accentuate this area.

2. Urban Outfitters - BDG Sally Denim Oversized Trucker Jacket: My long, oversized denim jacket is probably the denim jacket that I have that I gravitate to the most, and it’s mostly because I like to wear leggings and a t-shirt 95% of the time. Yes, an entirely fitted outfit can look great too, but I love to have a little bit of a contrast with the looser, oversized denim jacket paired with my leggings, t-shirt & runners to give me a relax, but put together look for my day. This is probably my most common outfit for running around on the weekends. (This is also a great outfit for summertime grocery store runs - we all know how cold the freezer section can be!)

3. Simons Indigo Blue Jean Jacket: I’d venture to say that this jacket is without a doubt, the photo beside the definition of Jean Jacket. Having your typical medium-to-dark wash, hip length, semi-fitted denim jacket in your closet is a must - to me, it’s up there with having a little black dress, everyone should have one. This type of jacket goes well with pretty much anything, from a dress, to your Friday-casual outfit (my personal favourite when I worked in a business-casual office was to wear my black cigarette pants, a graphic tee, a denim jacket and a pair of flats or heels, depending on how fancy I felt that day).

4. Simons - Twik Organic Denim Workwear Jacket: I’m someone who loves to wear a lot of neutrals, but I feel like in the spring, I’m always craving seeing some colour (and sunshine!), and this jacket for me is the perfect happy-medium. The blush pink is the perfect shade for the spring, especially around Easter, and I could totally picture myself with a pair of fitted white jeans, a slightly-oversized graphic tee, this denim jacket & my go-to Nike’s that are all white with a pale yellow swish (similar pair linked here).

Faux-Leather Jackets

Whenever it feels just a little bit too chilly to wearing a denim jacket in the spring, I love to grab my faux-leather jackets and throw that on over my outfit. I find myself most often doing this at night, and what’s great is that the faux-leather jacket adds both an edgy look, as well as can easily dress up a pretty basic outfit. Just like the denim jackets, I like to try & have a couple of options for length, colour & fit when I’m styling my outfit - what I’d wear with a fitted dress is very different from what I’d wear jeans & a t-shirt.

1. BLANKNYC Life Changer Faux Leather Jacket: I know everyone hears “leather jacket” and instantly thinks black - and honestly, so do I, but since I’m definitely someone who likes to wear more neutral & light colours in my wardrobe, especially in the spring & summer, I often find myself really drawn to tan and light brown leather jackets, and I feel like this it the perfect faux-leather jacket for the spring. Even though it’s not necessarily “cropped”, it’s on the shorter side where it will hit with the top of your jeans, and I’d definitely pair this with a fitted tank top (like this one from Mahina), tucked into a fitted pair of sort of ripped jeans, with a white tennis shoe for the perfect, easy-going spring day look.

2. Dynamite Oversized Faux Leather Jacket: This is the perfect faux-leather jacket for when I’m feeling a little bit edgier and exactly what I think of when I hear “leather jacket”. Since it’s on the cropped side in length, this would look fantastic with a fitted body-con dress, or even jeans & a t-shirt (Honestly, pretty much any faux-leather jacket looks amazing with jeans and a t-shirt)! My ideal outfit with this jacket would be my faux-leather pencil skirt, my Queen oversized band tee, black semi-opaque tights & my doc martens. Like I said - perfect for when I want to edge up my outfits!

3. BLANKNYC Semi-Fitted Faux Leather Moto Jacket: This white faux-leather jacket looks almost identical to the last one, but the white really allows for you to pair it with more neutrals and fun spring colours like baby blue, blush pink, pale yellow or even beige, without it looking too contrasty in comparison to pairing these colours with a black jacket. Since it also features done of zippers, buttons & other details similar to the last jacket, it also keeps with the edgy look! I would pair this jacket with a mock-neck fitted long sleeve in a neutral colour, a pair of medium-wash boyfriend-style capris & some white slip on Vans.

4. Dynamite Faux Leather Blazer: Last in my line up of faux-leather jackets, is this looser-fitting blazer style jacket. This one is definitely the most unique of the bunch, but I think this one is a fantastic option to have in your closet, especially for those who work in an office. This would pair fantastic with a pair of fitted, cropped dress pants, a patent heel & a fitted blouse. Since it’s on the more over-sized side, I’d definitely keep with more fitted clothing underneath to keep it looking professional, but stylish. If you’re wanting to pair this with a more casual-Friday style of outfit, I would pair it with some cropped fitted jeans in a medium wash, a graphic tee & flats.

Trench Coats

I’m such a big fan of trench coats literally whenever I can wear a coat. Winter, spring, fall - doesn’t matter, I will find a trench coat that is perfect for the weather that day. It’s such a great style of coat to wear to an office, or to an interview where you need to look polished, professional & put together, but also pairs so well with jeans and leggings when you’re wanting to look cute but casual. The best part about trench coats now, is that there’s some that are so light, you can also wear them in your office as almost like a cardigan on those days that are a little warmer outside, but still kind of freezing at work!

1. Dynamite Cropped Belt Trench Coat: This first trench coat on the list is exactly what I was talking about when I said you could wear this as a coat when it’s warm, but still not like 20 degrees Celsius kind of warm, but when the air conditioning is going at work and you’re freezing while you’re inside the building. The camo green is a great colour for a transition from winter to spring, since let’s be honest, we’re all wanting to see a lot more green around us, and a little less brown & white from all of the half-dirty snow. This is another piece that’s also a great casual-Friday in your office look to wear with a fitted tank top underneath, some fitted jeans and a pair of heels.

2. Simons - Contemporaine Tailored-Collar Three-Button Overcoat: We all know that when we get the first wave of maybe-spring-is-here weather, it’s so exciting to think that 15 degree weather is coming and coming soon, but sometimes that nasty last part of winter is hanging on by a thread, and you still have some pretty cold days ahead before finally coming out on the other side. This jacket is the perfect coat for those days since it’s on the heavier side to keep you nice and toasty warm, but also in a fun, springy colour to keep your spirits bright, and in hope that the warmer weather is indeed, coming soon.

3. Dynamite Belted Trench Coat: Another great option for the warm-outside, cold-in-the-office look, but on the longer side and in a more neutral tone, I instantly think about how killer this jacket would look with a pair of cropped straight cut jeans, a crisp white blouse, a statement necklace and a pair of heels. This would be a great outfit not just for a casual Friday in the office, but also just out and about & meeting up with friends for drinks after work, making it a great day-to-night piece to have in your closet.

4. Reitmans Structured Trench Coat: Last on the list is this pink structured trench coat from Reitmans. This one is definitely more of a walking-from-point-A-to-B coat, and less of a light coat that you can wear outside but also inside. Having a structured trench coat in your closet is a great item to have in your closet so you can wear it to work in the morning, but have it look professional & cute! This trench in particular is also great to use as a more stylish raincoat for days when there’s a light drizzle - you know what they say, April showers bring May flowers, so we’re going to have to suffer through the grey & rainy days a little longer, but it’ll be worth it!

Miscellaneous Jackets

For all of those miscellaneous jackets that you don’t necessarily need more than one of, I’ve compiled this last list of four jackets that one is probably more than enough for you to have in your closet. And yes, I’m aware if everyone bought and had this entire list of jackets, that’d be ridiculous, but it’s a list to help you narrow done the type of jacket you want & need in your closet, based on your everyday look & style! So let’s get into the last batch of jackets for the spring season.

1. Joe Fresh PrimaLoft Hooded Puffer: I have one of these coats in my closet myself, and it’s the perfect puffer for fall, mild winter days & right through to early spring. It’s light weight, and the pop of colour really helps get through those grey days. The best part about this coat is that it’s vegan, so no geese were harmed to make this coat! This is a fantastic option to have in your closet if you have a more casual style or to throw on when you’re going to and from the gym.

2. Joe Fresh Bomber in Black: In my opinion, everyone needs a basic bomber jacket in their closet to pair with almost any outfit you can imagine. The bomber jacket pairs well with dresses, jeans, dress pants, and literally everything in between. Having it in a neutral like black, white, blush pink or beige so it really is a versatile piece that goes with anything is key. And as much as I love pattern, if you want to limit yourself to one bomber jacket, I’d opt for a colour over a pattern so it can be paired with solid colour items or patterned items in your closet.

3. Joe Fresh Faux Sherpa Teddy Coat: Another fantastic option for your cooler days in the spring is a sherpa teddy coat. These guys are super trendy right now, and rightfully so considering that they’re not only cute, but super cozy & warm! I’ve even seen a lot of people rock these throughout the winter in areas that don’t get pummeled by the winter snow. This is another item that if you are interested in buying, I’d suggest going for a neutral colour so it can be paired with anything, but fun pops of colour like a brighter pink also look fantastic, so it’s really up to you & what you like to wear!

4. Joe Fresh Raincoat: And the last item, but definitely not the least - get yourself a heavy duty raincoat. I know I talked about using the trench coat from Reitmans as a raincoat, but I’m talking get one that’s truly waterproof for the days where it’s really down-pouring - and we all know we’re going to get them because #spring. The yellow obviously is so classic, but for good reason considering it definitely will add a little colour to what is inevitably, a very grey, sad looking day.

I hope this post helps you to narrow down what kind of jackets you want and need in your closet for this spring. Is there any style in particular that sticks out to you & matches best with your style and what you wear? Or even some style you think I should’ve added to the list? Let me know in the comments below. See you guys again next week for a new post! Xo.
