My Go-To Healthy Summertime Snacks

Whenever the hot summer weather hits (and believe me when I say it’s really hitting where I live right now), I often find myself not feeling as hungry as I usually would, especially throughout the day, which is totally normal. If you’ve read my past post (insert name here), you’ll know that I’m a big snacker throughout the day. I’ve talked about how when I’m in the office (lol, whenever we get back to that…), I have two snacks in throughout the morning, one with lunch & one in the afternoon. All in all, I love snacking, and it’s proven to be better for you to eat smaller meals through the day in comparison to eating three larger meals!

Okay, I’m getting side-tracked; back to the point – I’m not super hungry in the summer, so I find myself wanting to eat a light meal, or just snack lightly throughout the day, but of course I’d like it to still be healthy. (Confession though – I’ve been eating horribly the last weeks, and I’d just like to say that whether things are reopening or not, we’re still in a global pandemic and it’s totally okay to not be or feel back to normal!) So, if you’re like me & want some light snacks to eat throughout the summer, here are some of my favourites:

Fresh Fruit

In my opinion, you really & truly cannot go wrong with some fresh fruit. If you saw my post on Instagram last week, you’ll see that I asked what peoples favourite fruits were, and I mean…the photo is of a pineapple. So obviously I’ve had fruit on the brain recently. Some of my favourite fruits to snack on are pineapples, strawberries, mangoes, bananas & watermelon; and this summer watermelon has really been an absolute go-to! I don’t know if it’s just me, but I find myself liking watermelon strictly in the summer, where I can eat most of these other fruits year round. You’ll have to let me know if this is something you experience with a certain fruit too!

Small Charcuterie Board

I feel like we mostly talk about charcuterie boards come the cooler months when all of the major holidays hit like Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Years, but I love putting together a smaller charcuterie board for lunch, especially if I’m sharing it with others who are also feeling a lighter lunch that day. Like any other charcuterie, I like to add some crackers, bread, nuts, seeds, cheese, fresh veggies (my favourites are radishes!) & dried fruits. You really can’t make a charcuterie board “wrong”, so whatever I’m feeling that day, gets added to the board.

Caprese Bites

Basil plant growing in a garden

This summer I’ve been growing a ton of herbs in my garden, and honestly, it may be a bit too much, hahaha. In trying to find ways to eat up all of these herbs, I picked up some boccioni cheese balls at the grocery store, as well as some cherry tomatoes and took some of the basil from my garden to make some caprese bites with a little but of balsamic vinaigrette drizzled over them. If you’re growing basil in your garden this year too, I highly recommend giving these guys a try! Just like a caprese salad, they’re nice & light, and taste super fresh.

Watermelon, Feta + Fresh Mint

In going with trying to use some of the herbs I’m growing in my garden, another great healthy snack is getting a small watermelon, cutting it in half, using a melon baller to remove the insides, and then add it back into the watermelon half with feta cheese & some fresh mint! It’s so healthy & refreshing, you really cannot go wrong. It may not be a flavour for everyone, especially if you’re not big on mint, but it’s definitely been one of my favourites this summer.

Veggies & Homemade Hummus

Radishes on a farmers market stand

My latest obsession has been making my own hummus! Fun fact, chickpeas actually make me super itchy, so I don’t/can’t eat the usual hummus, but when I found Fraiche Living’s Hummus Recipe, I decided to give it a try using white beans, and it turned out amazing! If you like garlic, you’ll love this recipe. I usually like to eat this hummus with an assortment of veggies (tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes & peppers, specifically), and add a few bagel or pita chips to the side because I just honestly love carbs so much, hahaha.

Do you have any go-to healthy summertime snacks that you love to eat? If you do, please drop them below because I love food and I’m always looking to try new things & explore. If you try out anything on this list, try the caprese bites & let me know in the comments what you think. See you guys again for a new blog post!
