If you’ve visited my blog before you probably know that I’m a very eco-conscious person. I like to do my best as an individual to support brands that are sustainable, eco-friendly & fair as much as I possibly can, so it probably comes as no surprise that Grae Cove is a brand that I’ve been following along with on social since I came across their account.
Grae Cove is a sustainable brand that creates high-quality clothing items, made from eco-conscious, responsibly sourced materials wherever they can. Many of their pieces are made from linen, and feature classic silhouettes that are staples in any closet.
Sustainable Clothing & Why It’s Important
You may be wondering, what is sustainable clothing? Well, a quick Google search brings up Eco.ca’s brief definition of it — sustainable clothing is fashion that is mindful of social, environmental and economic factors. Essentially, it’s clothing that is better for the planet, and is produced in fair working conditions. In 2023, my goal was to just buy less stuff overall, but especially cheaper items from fast-fashion companies, and put my hard-earned money behind companies that may cost me a bit more, but create high-quality items that will last me years, instead of weeks, such as: Grae Cove.
Grae Cove ships directly from their manufacturer which means there’s much less emissions involved by ordering from them. In the typical clothing business, you’ll see shipments from manufacturers, to sourcing agents, to warehouses, then to wholesalers (and we’re only about half way through the process at this point!) — that’s a whole lot of shipping! Grae Cove also stands behind ethical business practices for their workers, and strictly follows the code of conduct as outlined in the Business Social Compliance Initiative*.
Clothing Review
HOLLIS LINEN BUTTON-FRONT SHIRT
SIZE XL
One thing that I absolutely love about this shirt is how classic it is, and how easily it pairs with everything from shorts, a skirt, to jeans and flowy pants. This is truly a staple item to have in your closet, especially if you live in a warm climate. Ultimately, it is January and I live in Canada, so this isn’t a shirt I’m reaching for on a regular basis right now, but given that the shirt is 100% linen, I know I’ll be living in it once the summer months hit.
If you are larger-chested like me, I’d recommend sizing up (which is what I did) for a looser fit as it is completely made from linen and there’s no stretch to this fabric. The sizing overall I would say is true to size other than this factor, but this is nothing new for me as a larger-busted woman. The fabric is very high quality, and I don’t feel worried about it ripping or falling apart on me as I wear it. This is easily a must-add to my suitcase for our upcoming Europe trip this year.
LINEN ELASTIC WAIST SIDE-TIE WIDE PANTS
SIZE XL
When I say that I feel extremely confident that I will be wearing these pants through must of the summer, I mean it. I’m a big fan of this style of pants for the warmer weather as it allows for good air flow, combined with the linen material, and the fact that I hate wearing shorts, these are going to quickly become a staple for me. Much like the shirt, these pants easily pair with everything from a button down top, to a long sleeve or a t-shirt, making it a very versatile piece in my closet. My favourite part about the pants is the little bow detail on the side that adds a little something to the look, plus allows you to loosen or tighten the waist as needed. These pants will also be joining me in Europe this year!
For sizing, I went with my usual size (I generally wear a L or XL, depending on fit and fabric) due to the linen material once again not having any stretch in it, and since there is the above mentioned tie in the waist, I figured if it was a bit too big, I could tighten it easily if needed. Sitting in the pants is very comfortable, but I will mention that due to the light colour of the material, you can see through them a bit, so do with this as you will.
Overall, I am thrilled with the combination of high-quality material, affordable price point and general business practice with Grae Cove, and I will absolutely be adding them to my list of go-to retailers to purchase from in the future!
