My Experience with JVN Hair
If you read my recently blog My Goals for 2022, you might have noticed that under my personal goals, I wrote that I wanted to take better care of my hair. Long story short, I’ve never not taken care of my hair, I just never really put a lot of time, effort or thought into it. I always told my stylist every time I saw her that I wanted to cut it, but not so short that I couldn’t put it in a bun. I’m a big fan of putting my hair up when it’s dirty and sometimes I’ll rock that look too often, if I do say so myself.
So in 2022, I’ve made it my mission to not only just take better care of my hair, but to bring out it’s natural wave/curl & rock that more often! Over the holidays, I got super obsessed with Queer Eye, and specifically Jonathan Van Ness — and once I heard that they had a line of haircare products at Sephora, I instantly ordered some and have been using that in my hair so that I can share my experience & thoughts with all of you!
JVN Hair Product Overview
I want to start by breaking down which products I have, and a general overview of how they work & what I’ve noticed when using them so far in my hair. I took a quiz on the JVN Hair website first to find out which products were best for me, and I also purchased some additional products to try.
For reference, my hair is wavy-to-curly, medium thickness, oily, collarbone length, colour treated & targeted problems for me are frizziness & wanting to keep my colour treated hair healthy.
Since I do have colour treated hair as mentioned above, I thought that the deep moisture mask was a good purchase for me since my ends are pretty dry in comparison to my scalp. Following the instructions, I use this once a week in replacement of conditioner and I’ve noticed already that my ends feel less dry & healthier.
2. COMPLETE HYDRATING AIR DRY CREAM
In my opinion, this may be my new holy grail hair product. Regardless of how I plan on styling my hair, this product has helped to control the frizz that I often experience in the summer, as well as when I’m blow drying my hair.
3. COMPLETE INSTANT RECOVERY SERUM
Another product that has definitely earned its place in my hair grail hair product list is this serum! I add about a quarter-sized amount to my palms, rub it together and then disperse it through my hair for heat protection when blow drying my hair. I’ve also used this to help rejuvenate any curls that have fallen throughout the day!
4. COMPLETE PRE-WASH SCALP & HAIR TREATMENT OIL
Last on my product list is the pre-wash oil, and this is where you’ll notice a change in tone of the review. You use this product, as its name indicates, 15 minutes before washing your hair to help clarify and sooth your scalp and give you stronger, healthier hair. Since I’ve only had this product for a short while, and used it twice, I feel like I can’t give a 100% honest review on it yet as it feels like a product that’s more of a long-term result. Once I have used it more, I’ll be updating this blog post with my thoughts!
Pros & Cons
Like any other product on the market, there are pros & cons. In my opinion, the pros do far outweigh the cons, but ultimately, everything is going to come down to preference for each individual person, so let’s get into them!:
PROS
In my opinion, the products are a great price point. You get a good amount of product for what you’re paying for!
Packaging is recyclable & more sustainable than other hair products I’ve seen on the market. There is minimal plastic, with packaging consisting of metal & glass primarily, and plastic used for pumps, lids and caps only.
The products are all vegan, cruelty-free, safe for colour treated hair and clean, which if you’ve been a reader of this blog for a while, you’ll know are all very important things to me!
Smells amazing, and from my personal experience, has worked fantastic with my hair type & has really helped define & bring out my natural curls, especially when using a diffuser to dry my hair.
CONS
Though it smells great, the fragrance is very strong. Anyone who is sensitive to scents could easily be turned off by the products, especially when they’re layered into your hair with multiple products.
More clear instructions would be helpful on the packaging. I often found myself going to the JVN Hair website to figure out best uses. While that’s not necessarily problematic for me, I could see this being a problem for others, and overall it’d still be easier to just look at the package itself for how to use it.
There you have it! My review of the four JVN Hair products that I currently own. I’m absolutely planning on giving the shampoo & conditioner a try once I run out of my current Olaplex shampoo & conditioner. Let me know in the comments below if you’d like to see a review of those when I get them!
